Car Won't Start? How to Tell If You Need a Jump Start or a Tow

You turn the key or press the start button and nothing happens. Or something happens, but not the right something. Before you search for a tow truck near me, it's worth spending sixty seconds figuring out what your car is telling you, because a lot of no-start situations can be fixed on the spot with a jump start, and that's faster and cheaper than a tow.

Listen to What Happens When You Turn the Key

Rapid clicking sounds

A fast click-click-click when you turn the key almost always means a weak battery. There's enough power to trigger the starter solenoid but not enough to actually crank the engine. This is the classic jump start scenario. In Durham's summer heat, batteries fail more often than people expect, since heat degrades battery chemistry faster than cold does.

One loud click, then nothing

A single solid click can point to a failing starter motor or a poor connection. A jump start is still worth trying, but if the battery tests fine and the click persists, the starter is the likely culprit and the car needs a shop. That means a tow.

Engine cranks strong but never fires

If the engine spins over at normal speed but won't catch, your battery is fine. The problem is fuel, spark, or ignition: a dead fuel pump, a failed crank sensor, or simply an empty tank reading wrong on the gauge. A jump start won't help here. This is either a fuel delivery or a tow to a shop.

Total silence, no lights, no chime

If the dashboard is completely dead, check the battery terminals first. Corroded or loose terminals can cut power entirely and look exactly like a dead battery. If the terminals are clean and tight and there's still nothing, the battery may be fully drained or dead, and a jump start is the right first move.

Quick test: turn on your headlights. Bright lights that dim when you crank mean a weak battery. No lights at all means a dead battery or connection problem. Bright lights and strong cranking mean the battery is not your problem.

When a Jump Start Is the Answer

  • Rapid clicking when you turn the key
  • Dim interior lights or a dashboard that flickers
  • You left the headlights, dome light, or a charger on overnight
  • The car sat unused for two weeks or more
  • Cold morning or extreme heat and the car cranked slowly the last few starts

When You Need a Tow Instead

  • The engine cranks normally but never starts
  • You jump started it and it died again as soon as the cables came off (likely the alternator)
  • There's a grinding noise from the starter
  • Warning lights came on and the car shut down while driving
  • You smell fuel or see any smoke

We Do Both, So You Don't Have to Guess

When you call Bull City Towing, describe what happens when you try to start the car. If it sounds like a battery, we send jump start equipment and test your battery on-site. If the battery is done, we can often replace it right there. And if it turns out the problem is bigger, the flatbed is already an option. Either way, you only pay for what you actually need.
